IF YOUR RETIREMENT DATE IS GETTING CLOSE

You planned everything else. Why does the life part feel so unsteady?

    •  The money is handled. That part I'm sure about. It's everything else I can't picture.

I was so excited about this. Lately I'm mostly nervous, and I can't tell you why.

I keep saying I'll figure it out once I get there. I'm not sure I believe me.

Will I be bored? Will my world get smaller? Will my partner drive me crazy?

Everyone keeps asking what I'll do all day. I smile and say I'll figure it out.

There is a whole second half to a retirement plan, and it has nothing to do with money.

The shaky feeling makes sense once you look at everything your job was giving you all these years.

    • Something to get absorbed in. Work that makes you lose track of time.

    • People who know your name. Not friends, necessarily. Just people who are glad you showed up.

    • The sense that your days add up to something. That you're contributing, not just filling time.

    • Proof you're good at something. Feedback that you're competent and it matters.

Whatever you thought of your job, it was supplying four things that make a life feel good. You didn't arrange any of them. They came with the position. And they all stop on the same day.

You have a plan for your money. What's your plan for each of these four?

That's what these five mornings are: the life side of retirement, looked at with structure and real psychology, the same way I work with my clients. It's made for a woman who wants substance.

A new version of each of those four takes time to build. That's the whole reason to start now, while your date is still ahead of you.

    WHAT ARRIVES IN YOUR INBOX

Five short mornings, one question each, about four minutes with your coffee.

Day 1 — The things your job was giving you for free

The things a good day was made of that you never had to arrange, and why they all stop the moment you walk out. You'll start to see which ones you want to carry into what's next.

    —————————————

Day 2 — The you that got crowded out

A look back at the parts of you that got crowded out over the years, the interests and the spark that slipped away under everyone else's needs. She's still in there, and this is where you start bringing her back.

    —————————————

Day 3 — What actually fills you up, and what drains you

A short exercise I use with clients. You'll score a week of your own life and finally see the pattern you already half-know is there.

    —————————————

Day 4 — What you'll actually do all day

For decades you ran in ten directions, keeping everyone else's plates spinning. Now you finally get to decide how the day goes, which sounds like freedom until you're facing a blank week. You'll build one small daily practice to come back to.

    —————————————

Day 5 — Where to actually start

The two frameworks behind everything you did this week, the honest reason noticing on its own never quite sticks, and the one piece to begin with before you retire, not after.

    —————————————

One email a day, short enough to read with your coffee. Each one ends with a question. You don't have to answer. But if you do, I'll write back. Not a bot, not a form letter. Me.

    Elaine Belansky, PhD

I help professional women with the life side of retirement, so the next chapter feels purposeful, grounded, and fully their own.

A year before I left my job, I was thrilled. I had a running list on my phone of everything I'd finally do. But as the date got closer, I started to feel considerably less thrilled and considerably more anxious. What am I actually going to do all day? Will I get bored? Lose my sense of self? Feel irrelevant?

I spent 30 years as a university professor and social psychologist studying how people make real change. So there I was, six months out, sitting exactly where you are now, looking for someone who could help me with the life side of it. I found almost nothing aimed at professional women. So I built it. This course is what I wish someone had sent me back then.

As I was working through the exercise, it made me realize how much I am capable of, and the possibilities. How much of it does depend on me and my thoughts and especially my actions.

Six months before you retire is enough time. Six weeks is waiting too long.

None of this builds overnight. Start while the date is still ahead of you.
